Many people still think Social Media is a young persons game, and other people think that Facebook is now exclusively older people. Well actually Social Media should now be considered a mature (mature in terms of its development) channel in terms of reach. The my customers aren’t on social media attitude is now fast becoming a fallacy. The following graph shows the top 10 Social platforms and their demographic weighting. As you can see all age groups are represented, with around 3/4s of users being between 16-44.
Social Media is now giving marketers an opportunity to reach all age and gender groups. In Fact the top 10 Social Networks now cover pretty much all your demographic bases, so your business should definitely be using at least 3 of these platforms to gain maximum brand exposure. The only exception being Tumblr and Instagram which are extremely popular with younger age groups. Which of course is not a bad thing as if you include one of these in your marketing mix then you cover pretty much all demographics.
